The Purpose of the Prophets
In this three-volume series, Pastor Melissa Scott, Ph.D. teaches on the purpose of the prophets. From the well-known to the obscure, all of them were courageous, tenacious people who did not give up when their faith was tried. They brought sins to light, corrected kings, and directed people back to the Lord. All of them spoke the unpopular truth, no matter the consequences.

The caricature of prophets has hurt the entire church. To get a clearer picture of what a true prophet of God looks like, we turn to the early prophets of the Old Testament: specifically, Miriam, Deborah, Samuel, and an unknown prophet in the book of Judges. Their character and function varied, but they all had one thing in common: they got their messages and directives from God. VF-2532.

Incidents in the lives of King David and King Jeroboam show that God sometimes uses prophets to bring our sins to light. It takes courage and loyalty for a prophet to speak an unpopular truth. Both kings had tried to cover up their sins, but it is impossible to hide our sins from God. God wants us to come to Him and be honest. VF-2533.

With the kings of Judah and Israel, the pattern has always been that when the leadership is corrupt, it trickles down. Focusing on the period of 930-900 B.C., we see how God used prophets to rebuke kings in an effort to get them back on track. It took courage and faith for these prophets to communicate a hard message from God. Not every leader received His correction, but the record shows that those who did, He was merciful to help and deliver. In this day and age, God is still looking fo...

Elijah was a messenger of God, and the story of his own life of faith is a message for us today. During the evil rule of King Ahab and Jezebel, Elijah had great victories like defeating the priests of Baal. Yet despite that victory, he ran away in fear, wanting to die soon after. Elijah was not perfect, but his devotion to God did not waver, and when he faltered, God restored him and continued to use him. Elijah learned that God is not only in the incredible and powerful events, but He is ...

The life and ministry of Elisha can shed light on our walk as believers if we make applications to ourselves. The prophet Elisha shows us that God doesn’t ask us to be perfect, but He does expect us to respond willingly to His call. The only question is, will we stay by the stuff, keep the faith, and overcome like Elisha when our faith is tried? Or will we fall away and defect, like so many people in the Bible? VF-2536.

The miracles that Elisha performed often centered on water, oil, food, or life and death. They reflected what was lacking in the people, and they were designed to turn the people back to God. These miracles showed the people what God could do if they were obedient to Him. God washes us, provides for us, gives us His Spirit and the Bread of Life, and gives us resurrected life. 2 Kings.
