God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham, blessing him and promising him land and a seed that would eventually become a great nation. Abraham passed these promises on as an inheritance to his son Isaac, and Isaac to his son Jacob/Israel. After Jacob/Israel died, confusion arose regarding how this inheritance is passed on. The biblical record clears up a lot of the confusion regarding the land of Israel and who should lay claim to it.
