Externals, the outward evidences of relationship with God reduce down to willpower and the ability to bear pain.  The externals mean nothing, the lack of them means nothing.  Faith working is all that means anything.  Faith turned loose brings forth new life from God.  If your life has become so comfortable that you don't have to strain in faith every day, you're in danger of being lost forever.  Christianity in the stream of the New Testament will always offer you the cold-turkey choice of eternity versus time that calls forth faith.
