The Jewish identity and the practices of Judaism did not begin to emerge until after the return from the Babylonian captivity. Although the priesthood had maintained certain practices and preserved the Hebrew language, most of the population had forgotten those things. During this time, there were waves of religious zeal, but there was also disobedience.
