The company of 300 with Gideon was to surround the enemy at night, blow their trumpets, and break their pitchers.  The breaking of the pitcher symbolizes the final act of committal, sacrifice, and putting yourself on the promise of God.  The broken pitcher is the step beyond: you hang your body on God's word, but if God doesn't back His word, you're dead.
