The book of Daniel is necessary to understand the events in the book of Revelation.  Daniel prophesied about historical events that came to pass hundreds of years later, as well as events yet to come in the last days.  His prophecies about successive kingdoms in history have been so accurate that we ought to take his end-time prophecies seriously.
