In Romans 8:8, we learn that those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But instead of will-worship and discipline to perform and keep a fundamentalist standard, Romans 8:9 makes it clear that we are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, when the Spirit of God dwells in us. John 15 shows us how God’s Spirit dwells in us: if we abide in Christ Jesus, He will abide in us. We abide in Christ when Christ is formed in our hearts by faith in God and His word. The fruit of the Spirit is the inevitable outcome of the placement of God’s Spirit in us, and God’s Spirit is in us because of our faith in Him and His word.
